A few days ago, I had a cosy food tasting session at the 'Spicy Thai-Thai Café' with 5 blogger friends. It is not your typical air-conditioned café, and I would say it is more akin to an alfresco eatery place. The location is within the Aljunied neighbourhood, and it is pretty far away from the MRT Station. Nevertheless, if you are staying nearby, or being a food lover who doesn't mind travelling far for good food, then this eatery place might be a good place for you to explore.
Spicy Thai-Thai Café offers North-Eastern Thai Cuisine and they offer an extension menu to cater to all ages of people. They use charcoal for fire to cook their soups and steamed dishes. All their dipping sauce is homemade.
We started off our tasting with some drinks that were available at the eatery place. We had Thai Milk Tea, Bandung and Ice Lemongrass.
We tried the BBQ Pork Belly (SGD18) which was nicely caramelised with a good smoky flavor and each piece of meat was tender and juicy. I savored every bit of it!
My favorite dish at the tasting was the Deep Fried Kang Kong with Special Thai Sauce (SGD10). This tasty Kang Kong snack was super addictive, and I helped myself to several servings.
We were pampered with Fish Maw Crab Meat Abalone Soup in Coconut (SGD28). The soup was tasty, and it contained various expensive ingredients and I enjoyed it very much. If you are a small eater, then this regular portion might suit as a serving for 2.
LaLa Bee Hoon (SGD18) was pretty spicy but it was superbly delicious. The whole dish was bursting with flavors and I was surprised how generous the Chef was on the clams.
I love the natural sweetness of the clams combined with the 'wok-hei' skills from the chef, which gave this dish a flavorsome one!
The most interesting food of the day was the Thai 'Walking Cat Fish' with Spicy Lemon Soup (SGD35). This was my first time eating a cat fish, and I was pretty excited to find out how it tasted.
The dish was constantly cooked under the charcoal heat, and Mr Ron, the boss of this eatery place told us that the meat of the cat fish will remain soft and tender even though it was cooked for a long time. In addition, the meat contains rich collagen which will benefit our skin and hair.
I love the garlic chilli and lemon zest which boosted up the whole flavor of the fish! This serves as an alert to all fish lovers! DO NOT give this dish a miss when visiting Spicy Thai-Thai Café!
The thinking of put together to create the concept of Thai Style Otak (Hommok) (SGD18) was pretty cool, as the otak was place in the coconut husk. Apart from ingredients like coconut flesh and otak, you can also find fresh prawns too! The taste was interesting with an overpowering coconut milk taste.
This dish MUST be eaten while it is served fresh and hot, as once you leave it exposed to the air, the taste changes and the otak turns soggy.
The Thai Dill Omelette (ChaOm) (SGD10) tasted normal, nothing to shout about. Although, the Thai Dill was cut in thick slices, but I couldn't really taste it at all. To me, it was just a plain egg omelette.
Instead of chilli crabs or black pepper crabs which are commonly found in Chinese restaurants, I was surprised that Spicy Thai-Thai Café offers Thai Basil Crab (seasonal price). I like the method of cooking as it brings out the natural sweetness of the crab which made this dish a delightful one!
I was also totally in love with this Cold Tofu with Special Thai Seafood Sauce (SGD15) as the gravy was tasty and complemented very well with white rice! It is definitely worth both my thumbs up!
We had a small chat with Mr Ron, and he shared with us on his love towards Thai cuisine. He developed a passion for it even before starting this restaurant! He is very particular in choosing the ingredients for his dishes, as he always believes that good quality and fresh ingredients will produce a better and enhanced taste in any dish.
If you are looking for a classic Thai cuisine then Spicy Thai-Thai Café will be good choice for you! Do try out their signature North-Eastern cuisine!
