[Food Review] Fook Kin 福劲 + Polar Bear Sisters

I recently had a dinner date with Tracy at Fook Kin 福劲, which is located a short walk away from Somerset MRT.

As we were approaching the eatery place, we could see that  Fook Kin adopts a Chinese concept, whereby the restaurant’s signboard was in Chinese words as well. The exterior of the restaurant had traditional foldable gates like the older stores in Singapore, giving it a touch of nostalgia.

Upon entering the eatery, we were greeted with a cheeky sign… Oh well, it explains just how much they appreciate our visit.

The neon lights in the restaurant reminded us of a modernised bar, which might be more attractive to the younger crowd. Of course, you’ll need some drinks to go with your meal. We opted for a cup of boring Honey Lemon and a bottle of exciting Fook Kin Beer, which was surprisingly refreshing!

Nothing special about the Curry Maggi Mee - Just instant noodle with Roasted Pork.

Naturally, we had to try the crowd favourite — the Fook Kin’s Mix Platter, which comes with both their char siew and roast pork belly. True enough, the char siew was tender and perfectly candied, with a good balance of meat and fat. The caramelised sauce was placed on the side which reminded me of those used for Peking Duck!

Fook Kin does their char siew quite differently from others. The caramalised Char Siew is done Malaysian style, so it was slightly different than what you’d get from your regular roast meat stall. The char siew was slightly sweeter than regular versions and had a pronounced charred flavour. The meat to fat ratio was also just nice, giving it a nice finish! I loved how juicy and succulent eeach slice of pork was, as it had a nice balance between the sweet and smoky flavours of char siew.

The Golden Cracking Siew Yoke was done excellently. The thick cuts of pork belly are completed by a super crispy skin that crackled in the mouth. We dipped them into the piquant mustard for extra flavor.

The Sweet & Sour Pork was da bomb! It was uniquely served on a tray above a large amount of dry ice, which gave it an aesthetic look. Sweet and sour pork is a classic dish and is a staple in Cantonese Cuisine. It was not overly sweet and maintained a well-balanced taste with the pineapple chunks. Each piece of pork gave me a nice homely feel.

This eatery place is a hidden gem along Killiney Road and the staff were helpful and friendly!

Baby and I visited a Polar Bear-themed cafe - Polar Bear Sisters at Havelock 2. This hidden gem has a cosy ambience, and they offered a wide range of homemade and premium ice cream! It just simply made my day wonderful with these good grade ice-cream selections!

We were pleased with our Pistachio ice-cream which I found was pretty deliciously addictive. I had it on a waffle, which was freshly made on the spot, and it was crispy and nice!

They served light bites too, such as Spicy Chicken Drumlets and Yakitori! I didn’t get to try out their red bean beauty porridge, as I was told that they didn’t prepare it that day. What a shame!

If you're looking for a cosy yet less-crowded cafe to chill with family and friends, visit them soon! They're open daily from 11am to 8.30pm.
