[Food Review] Nong Geng Ji Hunan Home-Style Cuisine + Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam

Nong Geng Ji Hunan Home-Style Cuisine (农耕记湖南土菜), is a popular restaurant chain in China, and they serve Hunan cuisine, which reflects the local appetite for high-quality Chinese home-style cooking. Being a newbie to Hunan cuisine, I was excited to give Nong Geng Ji a try and discover more about Hunan dishes.

What We Tried

We were a small group of 2 so we only ordered 3 dishes.

Stir-fried Cabbage with Dried Shrimp

We started off with this simple homely dish, and it was simply delicious. It was cooked to perfection. I added this dish into my MUST-ORDER list!

Braised Beef Brisket with Potatoes

It was satisfying, with tender, flavorful potatoes and brisket that melts in your mouth. While the beef could have been a touch more tender, the dish still offered plenty of warmth and comfort.

Fresh Shrimp Vermicelli & Garlic

This vermicelli dish came with 6 fresh prawns that were already peeled and with minced garlic served on each prawn. It was nice and savoury with a hint of sweetness. I love how it was arranged to be cooked on point in front of you, and the only downside was to wait for it to cook before digging in. I do recommend trying this dish as it was really flavorful but towards the end it was a bit too oily for me.

We loved their Signature Lemon Tea. It is a refreshing beverage that we took refuge from when the spiciness was getting too much for us!

It was our first time trying out Hunan Cuisine and we really enjoyed it. Every dish was well-cooked and packed with flavor. We will definitely go back to try other dishes!

Remember the viral ‘rudest’ owner of a Nasi Ayam stall from Fiie’s Cafe in Lucky Plaza? They have now opened a new outlet at Bedok Town Centre recently. This outlet is located within a food court with a short distance from the MRT station and Bus interchange.

I visited the newly opened Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam, Muslim-owned eatery located at Bedok Town Centre, following their first 3 outlets - Toa Payoh, Holland Drive and Woodlands respectively.

Get ready for fried chicken perfection at Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam. Their Signature Nasi Ayam is moist and meaty and is coated in a very crispy and savory-tasting batter. It's also served with slices of refreshing cucumber and a side of punchy sambal.

The fragrant chicken rice is topped with crispy batter crumbs! What’s more, it’s accompanied by a comforting bowl of Soto Ayam-style broth too

Unlike the original Lucky Plaza Branch (Fiie’s Cafe), they offer some choices such like Additional Rice (S$1) and Additional Chicken (S$5). You may also opt for some add-on savory ala carte Sides for a dollar each, and these range from Sambal Hotdogs, Quail Eggs or Bergedil to elevate your meal!

Try out this popular Nasi Ayam that everyone’s raving about today.
