[food review] Modern Indochina Cuisine & Bar - River Wok

River Wok offers the best flavors from Indochina under one roof. The restaurant has an eclectic menu that was created by Executive Chef Kantha Chookiat. The menu focuses on Southeast Asian cuisines from countries that range from Laos, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

I was glad to be invited to discover this gem of diverse flavors from South East Asia at the River Wok!

We started our tasting session with a glass of Cranberry Juice and Coco Bay, which was concocted to perfection by using lime, coriander, coconut cream and gin as key ingredients, and served in a young coconut! Delicious!

The first serving dish was traditional Thai salad, Yam Tuapoo Goong Sod (SGD16), which consisted of wing beans, tiger prawns and shredded chicken mixed in a lovely tangy/spicy dressing! The dressing was made up of fish sauce, lime juice, coconut cream, chilli paste and topped off with crispy fried shallots and roasted grated coconut. It tasted flavorful, and it can easily fill up anyone's stomach as a small meal!

We continued with our appetizers by having the Nam Khao Hor (SGD10-veg/SGD14), a Vietnamese hand roll made out of rice paper, minced chicken and roasted rice crumbles.

If you are a fan of Vietnamese Spring Rolls, then you will definitely love this rendition by Chef Chookiat. I love the accompanying dipping Chilli sauce as it helps to balance the flavors well!

Next, the classic Vietnamese staple, Pho Bo (SGD26) was served in the traditional way, consisting of a fragrant beef broth that was further flavoured by the additional richness from premium sliced Wagyu beef! The dish was accompanied by fresh bean sprouts and other herbs as well, which is the norm for a good Pho.

I do very much like the Pho Bo with Wagyu Beef! The broth was served piping hot! Each piece of the Wagyu beef tasted great and succulent, but the broth perhaps could have been stronger! Nevertheless, it tasted decent on a whole. This dish paired perfectly together with Hoegaarden Beer!

We were blown away with the decadent Gaeng Phed Ped Yang (SGD22), a dish that consists of roasted duck in a rich Thai Red curry. Chef Chookiat adds a creative twist to this traditional dish with grapes and pineapple, which gives a wonderful hint of sweetness with spice. The curry tasted delicious, and I couldn't stop helping myself to several additional servings!

Another dish that is worth a try at the River Wok is also one of their best-sellers! Traditional Indonesian Ayam Buak Keluak (SGD24) is a dish that has the 'Buah Keluak' seed stuffed with minced chicken, in order for diners to enjoy a nice surprise when digging into the nut!

We will never complete our meal without desserts, so we ended our tasting on a sweet note by having a popular Vietnamese favourite, 'Banh Chuoi' (SGD12), a dessert consisting of banana fritters and black sesame ice cream.

Lastly, everyone's favorite, the traditional Thai Dessert 'Khao Neow Ma Muang' (SGD10), is a sweet, sticky rice pudding paired with slices of sweet mango and coconut cream!

We had a pleasurable experience with my peers and thank you for hosting us at the tasting session!
