Traditional Indonesian Fare

Baby & I went to Pepes, the Indonesian restaurant that replaced Sanur at Ngee Ann City on a random day... The concept of Pepes is a modern restaurant serving healthier versions of Indonesian dishes. The use of MSG is avoided whenever possible. Healthier oil is used as an alternative in place of palm oil and the cooks also make an effort to drain off excess oil.

We queued for ard 5-8 mins for our seats... so I took a pix of myself while waiting then...

The Keropok tasted a bit hard in a way like they are kinda old from the plastic package that you can get from any supermarket or mini marts... It's a bit disappointing as I had expected a freshly and crispy taste a reputable restaurant... Neverthless, the sambal chili made up for the loss taste...

We had Ox's Tail Soup (Sop Buntut)... Taste perfectly good! But the portion is very small, and it was a bit pricey too.

Tahu Telur is the only dish we had that does not fall under the healthy category... The beancurd and the egg has been laden and deep fried till it becomes a crispy fluffy tower. I am surprised by the interesting square shape when it was served on my table... The crispy bits are crunchy and each bite comes delicious due to the generous amount of oil used in this dish.

The Ayam Pop - Chicken simmered in ginger, garlic and chilli powder then topped with chopped onions and cut chillis... At first, when we read this item from the menu, we thought this dish should be spicy... When I saw the dish being served, it didn't look exciting at all... In fact, it was a let down when we tasted it... No doubt the chicken meat was juicy but it just can't bring out the dish. Ironic,  that this dish was touted as their MUST ORDER item, but the quality is below average.
The damage was SGD46.73... If compared to Sanur, the food at Pepes is way lighter and less rich than Sanur... All I can say that the food served is authentic and traditional however the choice of food from the menu is limited and they are kinda pricey too...
